Marvel Snap is a new collectable card game published by Nuverse and developed by Second Dinner, a studio known for having numerous veteran developers and pioneers from the CCG genre. This includes incredible minds like Ben Brode, the former game director for Hearthstone!

Some of the major selling points of Marvel Snap are it’s incredible speed of match, with each match taking a maximum of six rounds and clocking in at roughly three and a half minutes to minimize downtime and maximize in-game action.

It uses numerous beloved Marvel characters with various artistic renditions of characters for each card, with the initial reveal stating there will be at least 150 unique cards on launch (not including the artistic variants), and that new cards will be added on a monthly basis to shake up the state of the game and keep the meta from getting stale.

The game is also one where you can earn all the cards without spending a dime, and while progressing your collection! At the time of writing, the only way to earn new cards is through upgrading your current cards’ visual style, through use of the free in-game currency (credits) you can earn through daily missions. You are able to speed up the rate at which you earn new cards by spending a few dollars on the premium currency which can be converted to credits

The game is published by Nuverse, developed by Second Dinner, slated for a release date later in 2022, and will be coming to iOS, Android, and Windows PC as stated in a release on the official website. In a recent Mavel Snap Reveal video, Ben and other Second Dinner developers state their belief that “the skill cap is really high, I think you can play Snap for thousands of hours and not feel like you’ve perfected it.”

The Gameplay

Each game starts with both players drawing 3 cards from their deck, having one energy, and three locations, with one on the left starting revealed. At the start of the first round, each player draws one card, and has a chance to play cards. Each card has a cost in Energy, a Power, and typically an ability. For each turn, both players have a chance to commit cards to the three locations, regardless of whether they’re revealed or not, and then the cards, and where they were played are revealed simultaneously.

With the start of each turn, both players draw an additional card, and gain an additional energy, with the middle location being revealed on turn 2, and the rightmost location being revealed on turn three.

As of round three, the game’s ability to raise the stakes is unlocked, normally a game of snap is played for one to two ‘cubes’, with either player able to surrender at any round before the 6th to only lose one cube for the match (cubes being how one ranks up in the game). When round three starts either player can hit the cube at the top of the screen to ‘snap’ it, meaning that the number of cubes won or lost on the match is doubled starting next round! The enemy is able to still retreat then and only lose the normal number of cubes, or if they feel confident, they can snap as well, meaning that the game is now worth four to eight cubes total! This allows you to double down if you feel you have an edge or if you know something your opponent doesn’t, and climb much faster as a result!

At the end of the 6th round, each player’s power at the three locations is counted, and a winner is decided based on who ‘wins’ more locations by having more power there. If there is a tie through both players winning one location and having equal power at the third, then the winner is chosen by who has the most power overall.

The game is currently in closed beta, with people able to sign up for testing free of charge and start playing immediately if they are chosen for the beta.

A recent release from the company states;

“The teams at Nuverse and Second Dinner—plus our good friends at MARVEL—are all bursting-at-the-seams excited to have finally announced MARVEL SNAP.
